Americans Win Triathlete Awards

Americans Sarah Haskins and Jarrod Shoemaker have been named USA Triathlete Olympic/ITU Triathlete of the Year.

The award comes from the USA Triathlon’s Athlete Advisory Council. Haskins and Shoemaker both ended 2009 ranked in the top 10 in the world.

Haskins, a Missouri native, finished fourth at the ITU World Championship Grand Final. Shoemaker, who grew up in Massachusetts, won the ITU World Championship Series event in Hamburg, Germany, and took a photo-finish victory at the ITU Duathlon World Championships.

“These athletes came through at big events and had consistent top performances that earned them these honors.,” Scott Schnitzspahn, USAT’s director of sport performance, said.

Hayley Piersol and Kyle Leto were named Rookie of the Year.
