The Hy-Vee Triathlon has been nominated as the area’s best spectator event by local tourism officials.

The winner of the Des Moines Area Sports Commission’s “Event of the Year” will be announced Feb. 21 at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona.

The Hy-Vee Traithlon was nominated in the Professional/Motorsports/Other category of the Central Iowa Sports Awards, along with the Dam to Dam distance race, the Principal Charity Classic golf tournament, the Knoxville Nationals sprint car races and the first Nationwide stock car race at the Iowa Speedway in Newton.

The commission is a division of the Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau. Formerly the Greater Des Moines Sports Authority, it was formed in 1992 “to establish Greater Des Moines as the premier Midwest community for recreational and competitive sport participation and competition.”
