Training: What You Need To Know
Training for a Triathlon can be intimidating. We want to help you train. The six guidelines below which will help you achieve triathlon success.

  1. Consistency: Life is busy and training for a triathlon can be overwhelming. The biggest key is consistent training. It is better to do something everyday than miss workouts and try to catch up on a single day. Triathlon training has a cumulative effect, so an athlete must plan to add to their training every week. Remember to build slowly.
  2. Balanced training: The great thing about a triathlon is that it brings individuals from diverse backgrounds together; swimmers, cyclists, runners as well as athletes with no experience. No matter the background, all athletes need to follow a balanced training program. At a minimum, an athlete needs to swim, bike and run two times per week. Many new triathletes will only train the discipline they enjoy. Remember, it is a TRIathlon.
  3. Endurance before speed: It's important that an athlete slowly increases their distance in each sport; we recommend increasing by approximately 10 percent each week. By starting easy and building endurance, one prepares the body for higher intensity training closer to race day. Don't risk injury by doing too much, too soon.
  4. Recovery: Training is a process of breaking our bodies down and then rebuilding them through recovery. Only in states of recovery do we become stronger and faster. For day-to-day recovery, get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated and eat healthy. A good training program will have at least one day of recovery each week.
  5. Ask Questions: As a new triathlete, make sure to tap into all of your resources. Join your local triathlon club to gain access to experienced triathletes and group workouts. Consider a certified coach. Read a triathlon book or research the internet.
  6. Enjoy the journey: Whether you are preparing for your first triathlon or your 100th, remember to swim, bike and run withthe enjoyment of a child, and be a positive role model for your kids, family, friends and co-workers.Train and race with a smile no matter what the clock says at the finish line.
