More than 160 young athletes competed in three divisions in Saturday’s Hy-Vee IronKids Triathlon at the Rochester Athletic Club in Rochester, MN.
Threatening skies held off long enough to complete the event, which served as a qualifier for the Sept. 17 IronKids National Championships in West Des Moines.
Athletes in the senior divisions (ages 12-15) completed a 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run; intermediates (9-11) swam 150 yards and followed with a 4-mile bike and 1-mile run. The youngest competitors (6 to 8 year olds) squared off in a 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike ride and 500-yard run.
Elliott Enoch, 15, of Minneapolis was the overall male winner in 44 minutes, 26 seconds. Winter Vinecki, 12, of Salem, OR., was the top female in 45:51. The top five finishers in each division earned a berth to the nationals.
