I am Chip Overton, a 46 year from West Des Moines, IA. I am an architect in West Des Moines where I own my own company – K/O Architects. All three of my children have participated in the IronKids events in the past and will continue to participate in the future. As I compete it has become more obvious to me that the main reason to train and race is not so much for me, as it is to be a good example, and role model for my children.
I have been competing in triathlons for 7 years. I used to be on the swim team in High School. In college I was a lifeguard and started running as a way to cross train between swimming and weight lifting. Back in 2005 the City of West Des Moines started constructing a bike trail behind my house, and in the spring of 2006 I decided it was time to get a “real” bike. I joined the Des Moines Triathlon Club in early 2007, and everyone in the group was talking about the new upcoming Hy-Vee Triathlon in June – so I signed up. I went back to the bike shop, bought a new triathlon bike, a wetsuit, and a pair of running shoes; as they say, the rest is history!
I feel very comfortable in all 3 of the events of the triathlon. Training always slows down for me in the winter months (Dec, Jan, and Feb) – I have always said that I’m a fair weather triathlete. I do not get to do it a lot but, I love to run at night, it is very peaceful. I hope that the Hy-Vee Triathlon continues for many years to come. It has become an expected event in this community and is part of my summer routine, and quite honestly was a turning point for me several years ago to a more balanced and healthy lifestyle.
