Courtney Lillquist, soon to be Courtney Cise, is running a 5k the morning of her August wedding, and she’ll probably be eating Oreos before that.
Courtney scoffed at a flyer for a 5k when she first saw it in the break room at work. After continuously thinking about it, she wondered, why not? She trained hard, but just couldn’t make it to the finish line. After that she ran road races for three years and then was looking for something a bit more challenging.
A photographer led her for a few miles at Ironman Kansas this past year, she was just sure he was noticing her skill. It turned out that Hines Ward was running behind her, so maybe the photographer was taking pictures of him. She’s trying to find a picture of her in front of him so it looks like she’s winning, but was very happy to cut 50 minutes off of her bike time from last year!
Oreos helped her set her current marathon PR. She ate a few before the race and now claims they are a lucky charm.
After a wreck mid-race she has been anxious about biking but loves the run because it gives her a chance to catch up to those that passed her.
Contrary to popular opinion, the steep stretch up Walnut before turning onto the blue carpet on Finkbine is something she “loves” at the Hy-Vee Triathlon. “The Hill” doesn’t let you slack in the end, you have to give it your all to make it all the way.
