I am Jeff Maher, a 46 year old from Overland Park, Kansas. During my free time I enjoy running, golfing, and SUP’ing (stand up paddle boarding) I attended the University of Kansas. Before a race I like to enjoy a banana and bagel.
This is my first year taking part in the Hy-Vee Triathlon. I was convinced by my friends to try it out and in 2013 I made the commitment to register. I started running marathons back in 2007 at age 40. After 4 marathons in two years I had surgery on each knee for meniscus tears. I gained 20 pounds and peaked out at 240. In 2011 I ran Boston on a charity bib number and lost 25 pounds training hard.
Running by far is my best event in a triathlon. My favorite time of year to train is the fall because it is nice and cool. My least favorite time to train is the summer because of the heat and humidity- I have a high sweat ratio losing 6-7 pounds in an hour. My goal for this year’s Hy-Vee Triathlon is to survive the swimming portion, push the bike, and pound the run and pick off challengers.
