I am Jesse Veenstra, a 27 year old from Johnston, Iowa. I graduated from college in 2008 from Dordt College. In my free time I enjoy playing golf, softball, and basketball. The Hy-Vee Triathlon will be my first ever triathlon. I got involved with the triathlon when one of my good friends, Lance Peterson, told me he had been doing triathlons the last few years and asked if I would join him.
Just over a year ago I could barely run 2 miles. In the last year I’ve ran two mud runs and several 5 and 10k. I won my age group in the last 5k I ran. Before a race I enjoy a protein shake with my eggs and coffee. My best event of the triathlon is the running portion. I normally train during my lunch hour because I have new born baby girl so getting up early to train is out of the question. My most memorable finish was when I ran a 10k in Montana on Thanksgiving Day in the snow and ice. Right before the finish line there was a nice sheet of ice that people kept falling on.
My wife’s goal for me is to not drown during the swimming portion of the Hy-Vee Triathlon. My goal for myself is to break 3 hours.
