After being a marathon runner for years, Mark decided to start a new adventure; Triathlons.
He graduated from the University of Iowa and is a teacher and coach at the Pella Community School District. He was a military brat growing up which moved him to many different countries, but he eventually returned to Pella to teach.
Mark competed in the 2012 Hy-Vee Triathlon and for the first time took part in the Championship Division. In 2012 he beat his time by more than seven minutes and was able to spend the afternoon watching and even meeting some of the elites that competed.
He started to compete in triathlons because he was burnt out of marathon running. He wanted a new challenge and triathlons seemed a likely fit.
He has competed in six marathons including the Boston Marathon. His most memorable finish was at the Chicago Marathon two minutes ahead of BQ required time. He had worked hard and trained hard for that marathon to raise money for Team In Training: Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation.
Mark must have pizza or pasta the night before a race along with an extra multivitamin and extra vitamin C.
He loves to get all of his training done in the morning before 6:30 am so he can be home in time to get his kids ready for the day and so that his nights are free to spend with them as well. It may ware him out but it’s worth it in the end.
